It was a really cold but crisp and sunny day in the woods today. We spent the morning learning the art of flint napping in order to make hand axes, Stone Age style. This is not an easy task, it requires determination and patience but everyone worked hard and went home with their own stone tool.
After dinner we learnt the next step in fire making. It’s not easy to light a fire when the temperature is -2 so instead of the usual birch twigs, we used birch bark and headed over to the pine area. A very different feel in this part of the woods, it was warmer and felt different underfoot, walking on pine needles instead of leaves. The children collected dead pine branches, processed them and in their teams, everyone made a good fire.
