Throwing sticks with Y2

There was a lovely feel to the woods today with a few trees starting to grow leaves and the sun shining through the branches. It felt like spring was trying to show itself.

Year 2 have made a start on their throwing sticks today. Matthew explained this is a Stone Age technique and told us how they work. The children chose the trees to cut and use and sawed their own length of wood. We then used flint to strip the bark. This proved a bit tricky for everyone but they worked really hard and by dinner time we were finished.

After dinner, we learnt the safety rules for using knives and began to make the points on their sticks. Again, this is hard work, using new skills. We will finish next week and they will get to aim at the targets but everyone worked so hard.

A game of Eagle Eye to end the day before heading back to school
